Synccinema Quickie - Kaithi (Khaidi)

Kaithi ( Khaidi) - Karthi 's Kaithi is a Crackling Diwali "Panch-Pataka" with the crime, thrill, angst, innocence, humour being the powder, the Technicalities and Karthi's Dilli being the spark, setting the BO ablaze.

A seized ton of cocaine, an accused feudal big shot striking deals with mobs to get back his grab on it, the team of police with their lives on-line, an 80km stretch to be covered overnight on a lorry, amidst this is a freed and released Prisoner longing for the first sight of his daughter. Can the men chained to their perplex position make it through the night?

Kaithi has the overarching theme of distinguishing the border between Police-criminal and Good-bad. The former has its line erased whereas the latter shapes to create a thick divide on that night.

Positives -

1) Story - The narrative is a slow - poison, setting off fires of thrill mutely and ends up the first half in a nail-biting establishment of the scenario. Though the second half gets a dime or dozen of melodrama and massy "Karthi" fan moments, the story's elements and its generic nature for its rubbing genres like crime, thrill, angst, innocence, surprisingly enjoyable humour, sock up in right bulk and are the saviour of the day.

2) Direction - Direction team of Lokesh Kanakarajan deserve a special mention for their work, as they put out a technically great cohering product which moves subconsciously for most of its part. There's an excellently conceived long take in the first 10 min, where the "Whats" are laid in a rib-ticking manner, and now it's time for "How". ( The scene deserves your time to watch in the theatres)

3) Screenplay and Edit- Add to that the tightly knit screenplay and sharp edit, which is so tight as the movie hits its breaking point, it feels like we're thrown in a drooping spiral with the tension of what comes next and the fear of the consequence of what happened.

4) Performances - The movie etches out commendable performances from Narain, George Maryan( written and played beautifully as a Dutiful and tested officer on the D-Night), Dheena etc. everything with Karthi (as Dilli) at its heart. He pulls it off with shear for his rustic nature that we are plunged into the plot right away.

5) Music - Music by Sam C gives the undertone high. Thankfully, the movie does away with all the song portions and sets a firm footing on its Background Score. The orchestration lingers and hangs at the back of your head. Kaithi's album release of Original Background Score will be an anticipated number.

6)Cinematography - This craft deals things poles apart to that of the flick's Music, it fills the space and makes us feels it's presence. Sathyan Sooryan's work in Kaithi is exuberant, crisp and mostly edgy. The feel that's brought out of honey tinted, rim and edge lighting from headlights of Lorry's and Streetlights, is what You have to see to believe it. The entire movie has only a single daybreak shot as it craves for its dark thrill of a Journey on a desolated highway touching woods and steep hills amidst.

Negatives -

1) Dubbing - As I have watched the Telugu Dubbed Khaidi, I couldn't ignore the fact of the Tamil Movie being screened. But dubbing and acting still had a High Standard for Karthi and few other leads but lost charm when voiced for others.

2) The tinge of extra melodramatic and commercial flavour in the second half, centrally written around Dilli. If not for Karthi's uplifting guise, the graphs of intrigue in the audience would've fallen much badly.

Bottom Line -

Karthi 's Kaithi is a Crackling Diwali Panch Pataka with the crime, thrill, angst, innocence, humour being the powder, the Story and Karthi's Dilli being the fire, Setting the BO ablaze.
