Mahesh Narayanan and team’s decision to narrate the story with the diluted pixel and boxed screens of social networking chats and video calls is a rather intelligent and pinnacle move in 2 major ways. First being the innate advantage of propelling the screenplay and edit rivetingly by having full grip over the planting, payoff and the medium of information that can be fed to the audience, as there is not physical shoot of any sorts. This is the filmmaker’s scalpel for un-boxing the genre they are exploring the way they want.
Second is the audience’s reciprocating reaction to the medium of information deliverance, where we become the spectators or rather the 3rd set of eyes and ears between a web chat or Duo call. This mode limits us from abstaining any necessary information as what we see is what we get. The movie has its priorities right with no-nonsense being primal among all.
What is even more highly prioritized is the choice of subject(s) and the story that embarks. We get an all innocent Jimmy (played by Roshan Mathew) who dates equally innocent and nimble Anu(played by Darshana Rajendran) and is in his mission to woe her. But there is a sense of sceptical thought from the man’s side for a background check. This is aced by the titan of hackers and Jimmy’s Eda, Kevin (played by Fahadh Faasil). Finally, when they do decide to marry – a string of harassments, missings and police interrogations take place. Also, thanks to movies ( for me ) and general knowledge ( for all ), we are aware of the Stricter law and policing in Dubai – the place where the movie is set in.
That’s where the dreadful truth, always lurking beneath the layer of romance, starts surfacing while we again onlook a journey of hacks into FB, twitter of Anu etc. by Kevin for saving Jimmy which, even leads to, at a point, making a shady phone call to a hospital in Bangalore.
It is from these portions, that the movie, without any hesitation, smoothly shifts tones and makes us subjective to many parables of societal flaws, eye-washing us with the intense segue into a climax. The transition works just perfectly by attaching a moral compass to Kevin – though trivial but makes a hacker at least humane - which one undoubtedly is (there is a scene where a person as cold as him is torn apart and sheds tears learning the reality).
On the outside the fable is a Rom-com, relationship drama (relaxed start) which turns into a unique, neat thriller (nail-biting middle) and in the end cuts sharp to a social mirroring (effective end) of misogynistic comfort, online scam etc., doing so with conviction, impact and believability.
This multifaceted drama proves the point of the filmmaker to have a superiority of the subject over the wisely chosen format of shot on iPhone which enhanced the cinematic storytelling and will be an inspiration to the filmmakers for their passion in these lost times.
