Revisiting Indian Cinema of '10s ( A Sunday Digest) -BASED ON A TRUEer STORY?
Based on a Truer Story?
Biopics and Documentaries have taken swift progress in The ‘10s, especially in Indian Cinema. Foreign Cinema already had a Culture of Docu-Dramas, but where it caught the attention of Indian Film Makers is the possibility of an Emotionally Wrenching Story with few Creative Liberties to the life’s of an “Achiever”(say, an underdog Achiever). It mostly started with Sports Drama –(MS Dhoni: The Untold Story and Sachin: A Billion Dreams along with Mary Kom and Azhar), took Patriotism from there to make Indian Scientific Drama’s like Parmanu: The Story of Pockran(2018), next leeway to the Terrorism type Martyr Thrillers like Raazi(2018) and Uri: The Surgical Strike. Political Drama’s like Thackeray, PM Narendra Modi also found some space and light, along with NTR: Mahanayakudu. Coming to this movie, we also had its Predecessor NTR: Kathanayaku, a movie on the legendary Actor who didn’t have the peaking homage and love as Mahanati had.
Mahanati's velvet texture lends from the Filmmaker's extrapolated writing "based" on the true events in the life of Savitri Garu, and "creating" scenes like in a non-biopic, for portraying a truer and hearty uninspired, original vision.
These Biopics on Celebrated
Actors and Actresses started with Dirty Picture ( a near Biopic
on an Actress) and ended on a high with Mahanati and also the
Historic fiction (fantasy?) Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy – which
is slightly debatable of its duality for having both a “Based on True Story”
and also Based on Creative Liberty with a craving for Generic Patriotism. Sye Raa can also be specially categorised as
the movie trying to compete with his Brother Historic Fiction from
Post-Baahubali era.
