Synccinema Quickie - Kurup
Kurup - The Scenic Beauty and immersive sound are enough to rejuvenate. But just like its protagonist, the story cant be found.
Its said that “Bad choices make great stories”. With the same analogy, we can say, “Eccentric Characters create enticing drama”. Kurup, played with style and substance by Dilquer Salman, is a brand ambassador of oddball characters. Also, he treads on an entertaining crime thriller genre.
He is crooked and addicted to the lavish lifestyle he always drowns his mind in. This lavishness sometimes is a few glasses of scotch and a packet full of puffing bidi. Sometimes it's to get hands-on gold, petroleum and a huge sum of money. The attempts of Kurup in his mission to conquer his desires and become rich should have our lips smacking for the amoral decisions he takes. He swings below the rules and hides in plain sight.
Unfortunately, our lips sigh as the suspense element goes dead in this film. The “inspired by true events” film stays truer to the disclaimer it opens with. No! not the cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption disclaimer. It’s the disclaimer stating most of this cinematic re-enactment is part fiction part truth. Instead, it's full fiction with few lines of truth.

The problem is with the lack of concentration on what to say more and what to say less. It’s the confusion of whether to make a niche crime thriller or a pucca commercial crime drama (it’s the latter which is the ultimate winner). Amidst all this is the period setting which, for its out of the world perfection and beauty, deserves a way better film. Same goes with the music and sound design departments.
Apart from the picture and sound, nothing registers in this mega masala Dilquer Salman film. It's almost as if the dazzle and musical beats cover up a criminally flawed crime drama. There’s a sequel in store, which hopefully isn’t as forgettable as its predecessor.
