#SCSuggests - Oscar Series - 1917

Image
1917 - The words "War" and "Soldier" get defined with brilliance in this nerve-wracking patriotic drama. War films have become a prominent Genre in this Millenial Hollywood Movie Decade with films like  Dunkirk(2017), Hacksaw Ridge(2016) ,  The Imitation Game(2014).   The genre is a fiddly choice to pick up, for the stories here are an inspiration or rooted to a real scenario and get weaved further with the creativity and mindset by a person born decades after. The authenticity in the story's timeframe blending with new-age cinematic techniques also is not everybody's chore. Firstly, let's get familiar with the loose structure of Hollywood's "War" films. We have a Side or Entity(which becomes the audience's prime perspective), a Motive, a War running and a cost(mostly manpower). In  Dunkirk(2017)   we have the British, France and the Belgium army with the goal of escaping(on a broader sense) Dunkirk (rounded by the G...

Synccinema Quickie - Ala Vaikunta Puram Lo

Image
Ala Vaikunta Puram Lo (AVPL) - Trivikram works on his mastered genre, a Family Drama. But, with a compromise. AVPL has its heart filled with positivity and happiness. It gets evident right from its rolling titles and Allu Arjun interesting first shot that the movie is going to take a ride - lighter and merrier, making a perfect festival release. After all, it’s for the bonding and family that we meet and greet on a festival day, which is exactly what AVPL firmly has in its pockets for the audience. Talk of subtle yet generic, everyday Heroism (with a hint of humour) – Trivikram nailed these parts with his writing. Talk of dysfunctionalities and expressiveness of truths in middle-class person -Trivikram again nailed it with his writing. Trivikram’s juggernaut and USP are in his writing powered by his cheeky yet catchy direction.   “Trivikram, since his earlier days of  Nuvvu Naaku Nachav,  has been making Family Dramas apart from his few movies l...

Synccinema Quickie - Rajni's Darbar

Image
Darbar – Murgadoss deals a Thuppakki style Action Thriller with Petta-Esque Rajni elements . Making a “Rajni” film and directing Thalaiva has become a challenge this decade, with Rajni not even registering a fruitful hit post-sci-fi  Enthiran (Robo).   It’s not always that Rajni only is enough for the film to be shouldered. His vintage hits like  Thalapathy, Narasimha  etc would tell that it requires a story at its core with melodramatic and heroic highs and lows in which a persona like Rajni would be the centre and prime taking a journey for his glory at the end. The last time this was perfected was in  Sivaji: The boss,  which released more than a decade ago. Petta,  Last Sankranthi was a feast for fans of his old school mannerism but felt subdued due to its tectonic shift in both its halves. When the first half was all Rajni blazing, the second half was Karthik Subbaraja’s story cosmos with Rajni merely in it. Both of them didn’t ...

Synccinema Quickie - Prati Roju Pandage

Image
Prati Roju Pandaage(PRP) – Maruthi ups his game, but falls short of his best work  Bhale Bhale Magadivoy.                                Raghu Ramayya, a man well in his Dotage, has his days numbered with his lung-cancer reaching its Final stage. Bidding farewell becomes a task as his family and the extended find spending his last days a Herculean task, drawing out time from their busy ticking clocks. But, his grandson Sai has different plans in getting all together . Firstly, the movie isn’t a Sai Dharam Tej starrer. It was a hard fact to accept and it’ll be even for you as he gets lost in the drivel as a caring grandson staling out as a spur for humane emotion, to the natural and aced performances by Sathyaraj, Rao Ramesh and others. Mainly, to the former, as his character as a withdrawn senior, throbbing and yearning for his family, gets placed right at the crux or is the crux of th...
