Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru as the name suggests is an extreme case of coincidental crime. Deepak is a retired police officer whose retirement gift, sadly, is a walking stick to back his lost right leg which got disjointed in an accident on his last day of work. Deepak relives those moments, post-retirement, by narrating them to one of his acquaintance. Deepak’s story revolves around 3 crimes which happen on the same night, each unique in their own way, that come to the notice of his department one after another. Deepak gets the know-how of all 3 cases on the same day, drawing out a few deductions. But those deductions won't suffice as they are not enough to proceed any further in the cases. But to his luck, he steps on an important piece of information which creates a connection between these cases. What exactly is the connect?? What exactly happened on that night?? What was so tragic that happened which cost Deepak his right leg?? How did the coincidence lead to something more intentional??  are the questions best answered by watching this movie?

Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru is a perfect cop thriller.  The movie is strengthened by its writing The incidents shown in the movie may or may not happen in real life, but are quite common and similar in a policeman’s universe. These crimes may be hypothetical and just a fantasy to be enjoyed in the form of a movie or a book. But the writer takes it to a more immersive level by creating a world of people who are perfectly shaped for that one night of brutal crimes. The story is written with smartness and believability. The writing gives good credit to both the flashback, where the real action happens and also the post-retirement phase of Deepak which is the aftermath of the tragedy that happened. The keen detailing and proper grasp of every moment and every character stand out, a story has very less to no loose ends. It is innovative to see that the story gets narrated in the form of a voiceover and also in terms of time frames. These both techniques are used effectively for the thrill and the emotion, wherever needed, to set the right mood for the audience. The highlight of the story is its understanding of the Policeman’s mind. It shows the policeman’s valour, audacity and nimble-witted nature with true colours, which catches the eye. The story also gets proper justice, in terms of its visual representation, as the movie is as gripping as the story. The direction gets the best marks after writing.
The director holds the suspense hooked in the perfect manner, he instils few elements like the crime scene area or masking the mystery killer to keep a healthy interest in the audience until the movie starts unzipping the reality. The director masters the use of the surrounding environment, be it the rains, or the lighting, everything seems to be naturally occurring but only making the movie more gritty and serious. The dialogues are written well. Right from the starting roll credits to the ending frame, the lines orated by the protagonist will stay with the audience. The dialogues excel in both, creating an emotional weight and throwing light on the suspense, amidst these, they also get added with subtle humour, creating an intense drama. The characters are all played mostly by new faces except Deepak’s, which is played by Senior actor Rahman. These choices help the movie as for the characters having lesser screentime, but a prominent impact, the fresh faces makes us look at the characters and not the actors, which is an important point to be achieved in these kinds of films. In contrast, when it comes to the Deepak’s and the similar kind of characters, the seniority carries the loads with ease, getting the nuances right, making the movie more professional. The persons who played the role of Gautham are the stand out performances along with Rahman.

The visual appeal of the movie is fantastic. The shots taken by the cinematographer, sum up pages of narration. He uses the lighting and the gloomy, dim colours to justify vicious and fierce crimes. He also gives a dark bluish shade for the Deepak’s post-retirement phase, creating a feel that distress has crept and is prevailing still in his life. The music is apt and the fair use of the orchestration keeps the narrative tense and never goes off track. The frames click well with the music creating the wildness and the hassle of fear and tension.

The movie very rarely falls short of anything in delivering a flattering story, except in terms of budget, which gets a bit substandard in terms of the production quality.

All in all, the movie has all the elements to keep the audience at the edge of their seat and deliver a riveting story.
