1 Nenokkadine is the psycho thrilling tale of Gautham's reach towards his tragic past and seeking revenge for it, but the things get tougher as he suffers from integration disorder which makes Gautham susceptible to imagining things and people out of thin air, making him prone to the inability to recognize what is the truth and what isn't. Now people start judging him based on this disorder regarding his past as a made up tragic-revenge story. Is his past real?? If yes then did he seek revenge or did he imagine himself that he sought it? and many more twisting questions come into picture which demands a watch.
Now this movie, hands down, has some huge cult following in the south Indian cinema, but, looking into its presentation, it also has its fair share of mistakes because of which its results weren't impressive. The movie is a marvel in terms of writing, it has the lip-smacking plot-line, unique dysfunctionality in protagonist, which is very rare as in south Indian cinema generally hero is assumed to be a perfectionist, also the strange and slightly dark characterization of the villains, the importance of the location to use it as a premise and a lot more scope for this story to create a edge of the seat psychological thriller. The writing uses its best tools and carves out a riveting story with these elements. The story has this inborn smartness and self-completing nature wherein nothing major can be spotted out as a plot holes or logic fails. Be it the use of Rubik's cube as a conduit to solve the hero’s  past , or be it the way the hero’s sense of remembering and identifying things to overcome his disorder, like this, every hole gets seized perfectly and coherently with the plot giving the movie full scope make  the audience just sit back and watch the marvel on screen. The story feels it is very much ahead of its time and is quite a rare feet any movie industry can take up.
Now, when it comes to taking the story from pen to the screen, the movie is a difficult one to direct, but if done well, is a marvel to watch. But the movie majorly fails in its direction and screenwriting. The movie is meant to be a puzzle for the audience to solve as the movie progresses, but it shouldn't be so puzzlingly shown with lesser than the required information that the audience give up solving, as they don't understand which part should fit in where and how much preference should be given. This drawback is hugely on the direction side. As the pieces fall apart as soon as we are trying to fix something. The direction excels in the first half, partly in carrying the feel, but for the second half, the movie becomes more gimmicky and boring. The audience feels like some important information is being thrown on the face and solved with some great logic, but with no time to digest. This is also where the screenplay fails. The scenes as placed in a kind of incomplete manner as they don't create the connection from scene to scene. The movie feels like pasting the pieces of a torn paper of a beautiful drawing but ultimately leading to the drawing with gaps and wrinkles in it.
The technical departments do a respectable job. The editing is clean. The cinematography is rich, with the usage of high focus shots, brightly coloured as well as deeply dull frames, bullet time shots, usage of metro and crisp lensing for the London episodes and the natural and colourful picturization of Goa episodes. All these give a kind of Hollywood(ish) feel for the movie. The art department gets a big credit as their attention to detail and the naturality in the objects and setpieces seen in front of the camera make the story more convincing and immersive. Music by DSP is one of the favourites, DSP has given his best numbers for the movie. The culmination of DSP’s energy and the thrilling impact of the story glitters on screen. Even the background scores set the mood perfectly, especially the piano track orchestra, which, again like the cinematography feels rich in art and gives the Hollywood feel. These factors make the audience, subconsciously make the movie rousing and tight.
Mahesh Babu as Gautham shows all his talent in portraying the tense, confused, seriousness of the character. His eyes speak the words for you. The scope given for other actors is fair and they do well. People who shine are Nasser, Kriti Sanon who both flesh out in their roles well. The movie creates comic relief through a few characters like the taxi driver in London etc. But only a few crack and few don't
The movie feels prolonging too much as the heart of the story, for which this interesting saga is taking place, is also explained at the tail end, after a 2hr 50min long run time, making the audience exhausted. The action in the film is very creatively designed and well shot. But the climax fight seems a bit unnatural and very commercial. The movie altogether has the smartness and the uniqueness and can be regarded as one of its kind, it is a pride to the industry to have such a movie but only fails in the direction, due to which the movie doesn't become immersive. But upon a proper understanding of the story and multiples watches, the movie catches on well with the mind.
